Alexis is in full-on "make all the apple things" mode, so of course she asked for caramel apples. They are, after all, one of the greatest things ever invented. There's just one problem - Alexis isn't the only kid who lives here.
Thou shalt not enjoy sugary goodness without Mila. Bad things happen when you do. But, Mila isn't big enough to really chow down on a normal caramel apple, and even if she were, she would eat all of the caramel and leave a nearly fully intact apple behind.
Alas, I decided we should make something more toddler friendly.
At first that "toddler friendly" thing was going to be beautifully caramel-coated apple pieces, but then I realized half the fun of "toddler friendly" is letting the friendly toddler help make things. Thus, we threw Pinterest perfect photos to the side and went for something completely practical.
I cut the apples into french fry shapes (with this thing). Alexis drizzled the melted chocolate. We all drizzled the melted caramel. Mila topped things off with an entire jar of sprinkles.
It was perfection. Messy, beautiful perfection.
Caramel Apple Fries
2 apples, cut into fry shapes
10 wrapped caramel squares
1 teaspoon heavy cream
1/4 cup chocolate wafers
All of the sprinkles
1. Part of the joy of this is that you can make as much or as little as you want. Use the quantities as guidelines and make less, if you want.
2. Unwrap the caramels and place them in a small microwave-safe bowl. Heat for 20 seconds and check to see if they're melted. If not, go for another ten seconds. Repeat until total meltage has occurred then stir in the heavy cream.
3. Place the chocolate wafers in a small microwave-safe bowl. Heat for 20 seconds and check to see if they're melted. Feel like you've heard this before? Great. Repeat it in the same way, but skip the part with the heavy cream.
4. Drizzle the caramel and chocolate over top of the apples. Top with sprinkles.
5. It's sliced up apples. They won't hold for long. Guess you will just have to eat them all now.
