Internet, Come Play a Reindeer Game with Me

OK, Internet Buddies, I have a question for you. First, the back story . . .

One of my dearest friends (who never reads this blog so we shall call her Oblivious) is what you might call a little bit flaky. We like to blame it on her age since her Granddaughter is just a few months older than Alexis. But really, Oblivious has been flaky for the ten years that I've known her, so that doesn't completely explain things.

It is really hard to buy Christmas gifts for Oblivious. She pretty much just buys something if she wants it. So every year I end up buying her some sort of random decorative item. There has been a throw for her couch, vases, candle holders, recipe books, and Christmas decorations. Two Christmas's ago I bought her two ornaments. They were adorable, whimsical little dogs that happened to look very much like our two dogs. Oblivious LOVES Jasmine and is a fan of Meg, so it seemed like a great gift. I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that she did like them.

In fact, she liked them so much that she gave them back to me last year for Christmas. I think what happened is that she packed the ornaments away after Christmas. When she pulled them out the following year, she thought she had bought them on clearance the previous year with intentions of giving them to us. I honestly don't think she has any idea that she regifted them back to the original gifter. I didn't mention it and my dear husband managed to maintain a poker face through the gift exchange, even though he remembered the ornaments perfectly. We just didn't want to upset her since she seemed so geniunely impressed with her fabulous gift-finding skills.

So, here's my question: Should I be a giant smart ass and give them to her again this year? Whether she catches on or not, it would be the funniest thing EVER. But it does seem a teensy bit mean. While she definately can take a joke with the best of us, I don't want to make her feel bad. So what do you think?

Hey - you are crazy!! I voted to do it - but give her something in addition as well - that'd be nice right? Just wait a bit to give her the other gift. Or not. She'll probably get a good laugh out of it. See ya. Kellan

Too much pressure! I don't want to be the reason you get in a big fight with this person. What does your husband think? What about other friends who know her? Sorry I'm a spoiler and wouldn't play along. It is funny, though.

Okay, I voted no but mostly because I don't know this person AT ALL. It would be hilarious if she gets the joke, but what if her feelings get hurt? I would be so nervous that she would be hurt that I don't think I could go through with it.

But you know her better than I do. Whatever happens, let us know what you did!

I don't think her feelings would get hurt. More than likely, she'll be embarrassed at her own faux paus. I would, of course, have a "real" gift for her.

I am a jokester. I think that is a funy thingto do. But get her something else. and tell her alexis got her the ornaments. Nobody can get upset with that cutie.

Hmm . . . Shell, you might be on to something. If she notices, I could either fess up or blame Alexis, depending on which would seem to go over better at the moment.

November 28, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterBurgh Baby's Mom

Oh, and Shell--Alexis has already picked out your gift! She did a fabulous job, I do believe.

Do it! Do it! Please do it! I love giant smart ass fun! Of course, I guess you could be nice and get her something that isn't a joke gift...but I think you two should pass them back and forth for many years to come. My husband's family has 'the pants' that someone opens every year at Christmas and then wraps and passes along to another poor soul the next year. FUN stuff! I love your personality...it is refreshing!

Hilarious. Seriously hilarious. That's one of the funniest things I've heard in ages. I have a lot of flaky friends, but that just takes the cake.

I voted "do it" because that will be awesome. But I agree with the others about getting her a real gift too.

You should absolutely regift it. She'll probably notice right away and be embarrassed, but flaky is flaky.

I do agree about getting another "real" gift. And definitely blame the ornaments on Alexis. Great idea Shell.

I voted to do it! I think that's hysterical and could become a very fun and silly tradition for y'all. As long as she has a sense of humor, that is.
Thanks for stopping by, I love new bloggy friends!! I swear.. no Nyquil involved in that pic! They just run themselves silly and sometimes do that. LOL! I just happened to pop in the room and see them like that.

I don't know! It's too much pressure! If only I knew the wonderful lady in question it would sure help.

It would be so fun to regift. Again. But I can't stand the thought of hurting feelings.

It's absolutely hysterical that she gave them back to you to begin with. And Kudos to your husband for keeping a straight face. That took some doing, I'm sure.

I haven't voted yet; I am leaning toward no.

If she gets the joke, you may find yourself getting the ornaments back again. The fun could go on for years!

If she doesn't get it, that would kind of suck. And if it hurts her feelings, no more gifts from her!

But if you can do it in the spirit of good clean fun, I say, go for it. If her response is unknown to you, I'd say don't.

good luck. You have to tell us what you decide!

Not to worry, you will all know if I do it or not. I've at least got to tell you if she gets the joke in the event that I go for it. I have to admit, I'm leaning towards yes. Like many of you said, it could become one of the longest running jokes of all time if it goes well.

November 29, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterBurgh Baby's Mom

Nah, ask her where she got the ornaments she gave you last year, because you want to buy more...then see what she comes up with! Or buy her some more ornaments...that you really like, cause you'll likely get them back!

November 29, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterJenn

I voted Do It!Do It! because I absolutely am a smartass. And I would do it.

And I am dying to know what happens. Five bucks says she does NOT notice!!

November 29, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterJenny H.

I can't take that bet because I suspect you're right. If someone can't remember that you gave them something, what are the odds that they'll remember they gave it to you?

November 29, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterBurgh Baby's Mom

Okay. I totally remember this. So I should soon be catching up to where I first fell for ya.
