A Mary Kay Giveaway!

I am SO not a girly girl. I fail miserably at caring a lot about how my hair looks. I don't get worked up in a frenzy about shoes or clothes. Most of all, I am very barely competent when it comes to makeup. I shop at the big box stores, generally grabbing whatever is on sale.

Girly girls everywhere are cringing right now. I know. I KNOW.

So it turns out that if you look past the big box store selection, you can find lip gloss that lasts longer than an hour. You can find a mascara that doesn't flake and make your contacts turn into irritating weapons of mass eye destruction. You can even find blush that doesn't go from invisible to clown levels instantly.

WHY DIDN'T YOU GUYS TELL ME?

Fortunately, BlogHer and Mary Kay let me find out for myself.

In the interest of full disclosure, I would have never ever tried Mary Kay products if they hadn't been sent to me to review. I'm a creature of habit and procrastination, so it's not like I have the mental competence required to order makeup before I actually need it.

It's time that I learn because HOLY COW, YOU GUYS.

Let's start with the most life-changing thing I discovered in that box.

What's that you're saying? It's just a compact? NO IT IS NOT.

In that tiny little compact there is enough room for a Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color, three Mary Kay Mineral Eye Colors, and brushes. You can switch out which colors you have in it, so it really is like having an entire makeup bag in one neat case. I guess it is possible to freshen up makeup on the go without carrying around 17,034 tiny little containers of makeup. I had no idea!

I can't even express how impressed I was with that little Compact Mini. Seriously. I'm such a dork, I know.

Also in that box was this:

Nourishine Plus Lip Gloss in Mango Tango and Rock 'n' Red. First of all, I've lived all my years thinking I can't pull off bright red lipstick. I just found out I've been wrong all of my years. The Mango Tango especially was a great color for me. As an added bonus, it wasn't sticky or gross feeling.

The big box store stuff lasts about ten minutes. I'm just sayin'.

Life-changing stuff, this Mary Kay.

I also tried:

TimeWise Repair Volu-Firm Eye Cream: It had the greatest applicator in the history of applicators, and it worked. I'm still as sleep-deprived as ever, but my eyes aren't giving that away.

Lash Love Mascara, Ultimate Mascara, and Lash Primer: The Lash Love is fantastic for everyday use because it's not heavy but rather just enough to make it look like I have eyelashes. Which I don't. The Ultimate Mascara is far more dramatic, so it's great for a night out on the town. I also tried the Lash Love Mascara in the waterproof version. I liked the regular non-waterproof better because it seems to last perfectly all. day. long. As for the Lash Primer, who knew such a thing existed? I like it. It helps prevent that clumpy spider-legs look because you can lengthen without adding color and then apply just a single coat of mascara on top.

TimeWise Microdermabrasion Kit: I've tried a lot of microdermabrasion kits over the years, and this one was my favorite. It does the trick and isn't harsh. It left my face all sorts of soft and fancy.

All in all, I think I became a Mary Kay fan. Whoddathunkit?

Thanks to BlogHer, there's a little something in it for you if you leave me a comment telling me the best beauty trick you've ever learned. If I were entering, I'd have to admit that a man once taught me to get the eyeshadow brush a little wet before applying eye shadow when I want a more intense color. Leave your beauty tip in the comments and you'll be entered to win a Mary Kaygift basket

Use a dab of white toothpaste on a pimple overnight and it will dry right up.

Mary Kay has THE BEST eye make up remover! I've been using it since I started wearing mascara (high school?) and haven't found anything that compares.

Make up tips? HA! I';ll go with wash your hair - I tried that "no shampoo" diet for two months this year... UM NO.. Baking soda is not enough to clean the nasty ass grime out of your hair. Its just not.

Never use eye liner on your entire eye, it will make your eyes look small.

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarley

Tip - If you're getting your hair done up for a special occasion wash it as early as you can possibly stand it before your appointment. It's easier for the hair dresser to work with hair that isn't freshly washed. And if you can get away with it do not use conditioner.

Sad but I don't think I can think of any make-up tips! I all I wear is mascara with foundation and that's it! I knew the tip about not washing your hair when getting an updo....

To make curl in your hair hold faster and longer, spray your hair on the curling iron with hairspray.

Put foundation on your eye and your lips to hold your colors on the eyes and lips all day long!

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTracy

I didn't wear makeup daily until I was 25 so I am behind in my knowledge! I do think that mineral makeup is the best ever and I always apply a bit more than I thinkI should since my tendency is to not put enough on!

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

Oil Cleansing Method totally changed my complexion - it removes makeup with ease and leaves my skin feeling soft and moisturized without extra product. (I am also loving red lips which is something I have NEVER ever (taylor swift style) done before)

I love to play around with makeup, but I get stuck in a rut with the basics a lot. Jeremy Renner, the actor from the Hurt Locker movie, used to be a makeup artist. His tip, when I saw him on Ellen, was to always frame your face with the five basics- eyebrows, mascara, blush, lipstick, powder. It's pretty much what I do anyway, but it stuck with me.

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEleanor's Trousers

My tip is that, in a pinch, you can you lip color on cheeks or even eyes to get some color back in your face. I never realized how important blush is!

i am no girly girl either... which i am typically a little sad about.

The best beauty tip I learned was never to mascara an eye's bottom lashes... And it's so true. But gosh, i would almost KILL For a good quality mascara!

I always use eyelash primer before mascara, if I don't, then I really look like one tired raccoon.

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMary Lynn

I love the mascara! I would love the primer!

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMAry

I use an eyelash curler, which I feel makes me look less tired without having to use mascara. This is good since I will inevitably rub my eye and look like a raccoon if I have mascara on!

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle B

my make up tip is for de-shineing your face - rather than buy those expensive little blotting paper, use a toilet seat cover. press onto your face and presto(!!) oil wicked away but all the makeup stays in place...

:)

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLauren W

Lash primer has been a miracle worker for me!

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPittFan

Nivea has the best hydrating lip care. Just as awesome as FRESH, but it costs a lot less than $22 a container.

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternikki

I would say that highlighting and contouring can make all the difference in your overall look!

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternycldenise

Beauty tip: use conditioner as shaving cream. :)

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMel

I would love to start to wear makeup again, and all of these tips are going to help because I have no clue what I am doing, lol.

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRachel Nehmelman

white or light beige eyeshadow near the corners of your eyes and under the arch of your eyebrows can help hide the tired eyes look.

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkristen

I love the MK TimeWise lip stuff. My lips can be all bloody, cracked, and nasty, I put it on before bed, and by morning, NEW LIPS!

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmber

It's not really a tip, but those tissue paper-thin blotting cloths are a godsend!

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLauren C.

Face primer. I just started using it and it really works. I have oily skin and it helps alleviate the shine and keep my make-up on all day.

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarie

I have a similar level (aversion?) to girly girl makeup. My best investment, when I make the time, is to have my eyebrows waxed at a salon. Brightens and frames my eyes so that it looks like i'm wearing makeup.

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDi

Vaseline is the best moisturizer. My grandma used to slather it on her face every night she died at 88 without a single wrinkle.

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJulie P

My best make up trick....apply liquid foundation with a brush...lasts longer, goes on smoothly.

December 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

I love using an eyebrow pencil and brush. They look more defined.

December 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

Because I get antsy if I have to spend more than three minutes making myself look reasonably professional in the morning, I love tinted moisturizers, especially ones with spf. Aveeno makes one I like a lot.

December 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKate

My make up tip is to use a concealer under your eyes. Sounds so basic but I used to always skip it but since I started using it I can't believe the difference it makes!

Smile. It's amazing! I do love make up though.

December 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGlennen

Crap. I don't need another expensive habit. But I do need some decent make up. I've never tried Mary Kay. Maybe I should.

Beauty tip? Sleep and water! I get enough of 1 but not the other. My other thing is I've given up foundation in all forms. I just wear tinted moisturizer because it cuts out a step and we older ladies need moisturizer.

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle Smiles

Put some highlighter under your eyebrow and in the corner of your eye to brighten your face. With two toddlers, I need the help!!

December 13, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMandy B

My tip is to set all your makeup with a good finishing powder. I love MakeUp Forever's HD finishing Powder but I am sure there are a ton out there. I love Mary Kay products and am sure they also have a great one. ;)
