Yet Another Reason She Should Be An Only Child

I like to name things. I just do. I have named my camera, my phone, the odd Superman-blue mailbox I pass on my way to work, the brown and white-spotted horse in the field over there . . everything.

I name everything.

That includes my car.

I've been naming my cars since the beginning of time. I started with The Green Beast, a beat-up olive-green Mercury Marquis. I then had Roger, an off-white Ford Ranger pick-up. Later there was a Honda Civic CRX named Civvy, which was followed by Barney, the frightenly purple Nissan 200SX. More recently I drove Ali the Oldsmobile Alero and then Mitsi the Mitsubishi Endeavor. That was all topped off by that wench Audrey.

Somewhere along the line, Alexis started interfering with my highly scientific naming methodology. Instead of just letting me have my painfully obvious and perhaps cheesey names, she went and voice an opinion. KIDS THESE DAYS. She always refused to call Audrey by her name, instead preferring to call her "Audi Audi." Which, uh, NO. Her name was Audrey, thank you very much.

With the new Nissan Rogue, I had a million names I liked. She-who-interferes-when-not-invited decided she didn't like any of them. NONE OF THEM. I would suggest a name, she would insist it wasn't right. I would ask her what she wanted to name it, she would reply, "Toy." NOT. A. CHANCE. I refused to name my Nissan "Toy." REFUSED.

Mostly because there's a Toyota in our driveway and I'm easily confused. But, whatever.

It took Alexis and I a week to come to an agreement on the Nissan's name, and even then I had to bribe her to get my way.

Nissa.

Done.

And now I know for certain that should Alexis ever end up with a younger sibling, we're going to need a lot of money to convince her to let us pick out the name.

I wonder what she would think of Old Lady Beige as my van's name. My Alexis thinks is stupid and "Seriously mom why would you name your vehicles anyway" This coming from the child who named everything Pinky Sarah when she was younger.

So I have to say I'm *REALLY* glad I'm not the only one who names things....Thankfully my kiddo hasn't picked up on it yet and started objecting..(Well except that one goat kid who is now forever saddled with "Princess")

My cars have been:

Geoff the Geo
Fred the Saturn
Sadie the Saturn
Kavanagh the Kia (he was a real jerk, and lasted about 86 days)
Adrian the Aveo (current car and nightmare ;))

And don't even get me started on the technology (the camera is Flynn, and uh....I've had many awkward moments when I've been out, and shooting pictures and don't realize that I've started talking to the camera... *hangs head in shame*)

This reminds me of my friend who had a baby boy lately she and her husband named Noah Emanuel.
The only problen is, that his preschool sister Klara doesn't like the name. She prefers Rafael. So when she was asked at the kindergarten or by the neighbours and family friends how the new baby brother is called she proudly said to everybody "RAFAEL".
So my friends now keeps running around telling all kind of people that the boy is actually called Noah to everybody's suprise.

Another friend of mine asked her son Ben how to name his baby brother when she was pregnant again and he immediatly said TIM (he was 3.5 years old and had no toy or friend or pet called Tim). They tried other names but Ben kept pointing to the belly saying TIM!
Ben and Tim are now teenage boys ;)

You see .... just forget about thinking of another baby names. If it ever happens it will be for sure Alexis who decides.

As for cars:
My old red Opel Corsa's name was Eddy and the black BMW of my mother which belongs to my sister now is called Curt and my mom's motorcyle was called "Black Flame". So you are not alone ;)

The Rafael comment made me laugh because when I met Jim (on the internet) his name online was Raphael. I thought that was a little weird. I asked it that was really his name, and was relieved that it was Jim!

If I had a kid right now, they would have one of four names.. Leo, Quincy, Annie or June. (My kid is obsessed with the Little Einsteins).

We've always named our cars, but I've fallen out of the habit.

My sister though has an Audi that she named "Innie." It's on the license plate.

We let Christopher get involved in naming Emily and I feel lucky that I don't have a daughter named Megazord.

I had an ancient Olds when I was in high school that we called "gadget car". Not because it HAD gadgets, but because NONE of the gadgets worked. And I currently call our minivan the Space Shuttle.

When I was 11, I got to name my baby sister - Lacey Elizabeth. And I still love the name, even if SHE drives me nuts.

You know it wouldn't really matter if you both decided on a name for a future baby. She'd nickname that thing the very minute she laid eyes on it and there would be nothing that you could do to change it. Ever. How do you think grown men end up walking around with names like Bubba?

Oh, wait. That's just a Texas thing. But you get my point.

Now you know why I put my foot down and had veto rights on any & all names My Sweetie and the Howler came up with for kittens. The Howler's naming usually involves stating the obvious, as in, her stuffed bear is named "Bear" and the monkey is named "Monkey" My Sweetie's family has the habit of using variant of 3 pet names: Big Dog, Small Cat, and Baby.

If we were insane enough to have a baby...well, I'm terrified of what we'd end up with for name.

I love that you name all your stuff. We named the GPS "lady" in each of our cars. My husband's is Jane and mine is Camellia. Sometimes they make us mad though and we have other little names for them, if you know what I mean.

Alexis is so spunky. I love that about her! :)

My mom named my brother Michael. I told everyone his name was guido. At preschool the even put up a sign with congratulations to the trovato family on their new baby boy guido trovato. Haha.

4 kids. Dad's car. Mom's car. Good with the fertility. Not so good with the nicknames. We did manage to name a dog, but it went sorta like this: Wife: "How about [something I forget] or Penny?" Me: "Penny. Sold."

I LOVE naming stuff! Always have! It's great to know I'm not alone. Seeing as how I don't have kids, I've only been able to name my cars and pets. My current car (a Chevy Impala) is Lou, since it's kinda androgynous. When I think of Impalas, I think of cop cars and women who look like men who look like cops, so I think it fits. :P Before that, it was Bessie, my Ford Focus that was old and decrepit. Then my Dodge Neon was...well...a name that I can't repeat on here cause it gave me all kinds of problems.

As for naming pets, I sorta LURV my names. I had a guinea pig that I named Lobo at age 4. So what if "lobo" means "wolf" in Spanish? Then there was Arizona, the cocker spaniel I got when I was 13, so named for the tea. My current darling is Mimi Rose, my poodle mix, cause she's a diva and only a diva yuppie name will do!

My parents had:

Sam: light blue 83 Ford Escort
Finneas: silver 87 Plymouth Voyager
AJ: red 93 Plymouth Acclaim.

I'm not sure if they've named cars since then.

My wife and I have had:
Hector: blue 87(?) Oldsmobile Cutlass
Alfred: white 93(?) Buick Century
Eddie: blue/silver 04 Honda Odyssey

Yet another reason you should let me borrow her: my Jeep Liberty is named....Jeepy-Jeepy. I think she would approve. :)
