Never Satisfied

It occurred to me today (thanks, Karen for the reminder!) that I never did post Alexis' two-year portraits. Nor have I sent prints of the darn things out to family members (yet--I swear, it will happen!). The reason for my delay is that I had full intentions all along of getting another set taken. Between my brain going on spontaneous vacation and various little setbacks, two months later I still haven't gotten on the ball.

The primary setback has been that Alexis has not managed to go more than a few days without having some sort of major bruise on her noggin. She's always a walking accident, but I would prefer our less-than-annual family portraits to not make it look like we punch our kid in the face. The first bruise was a lovely little black eye she obtained while pushing a truck around at daycare. Her little feet slipped out from under her and she inadvertently ended up pushing the truck with her eye.

Now she's sporting an even bigger bruise on her forehead. I find this bruise particularily fabulous because while I know it happened at daycare, nobody seems to know how. I'm pretty funny about that whole thing where nobody knows how she managed to get a bruise on her forehead the size of a dollar coin. And by "funny", I mean PISSED. When she got the black eye, I honestly just figured that's the kind of thing that happens. It was no big deal because THERE WAS AN EXPLANATION. This time, all I know is that it happened in the first hour she was at daycare, before her favorite teacher (and BFF) arrived. That teacher was right there with me, all sorts of ticked off that a kid managed to whack her head without anyone knowing what happened. There's no doubt she screamed bloody murder when it happened, so it's not like it could have gone unnoticed. The most annoying part is that the owner of our daycare is out on medical leave, so I can't go throw a fit to the appropriate party. (And yes, I did just write that entire paragraph for no other reason than so I will remember to throw a fit.)

Anyhoo, just as soon as this latest proof that my kid is a klutz (or got smacked by another kid, which is actually what I suspect happened) starts to fade, there will be family portraits and there will be more two-year portraits of the Toddler. Hopefully this all will go down before she turns three.

(BTW, you can tell me these portraits are fine, but I won't be able to hear you as I have my fingers shoved in my ears to block you out. Her hair was a hot mess that day, and that's that.)

HATE BLOGGER! Third time:

I think she looks adorable. But, shocked at only one outfit. We normally take about five..all custom, personalized, and or the shortall variety :)

You want those redone?! Honey, you need more kids. When you've got 4 (or more) to work with you take anything where all the eyes are open. And sometimes that's optional.

Those pics are fabulous! I love the attitude of the last one.

I should probably add that the main reason I'm not happy with these is that I didn't get the one and only shot I was after. All I wanted at that appointment was a photo of Alexis standing with her beloved Bear in front of her. The photographer didn't manage to get that shot without eyes being closed, my arm being in the portrait, etc. If she wouldn't have insisted on all the stupid props and would have stuck with more of the same like I asked her to, we probably would be OK.

And man-oh-man was her hair awful that day. All I needed was a comb, and I didn't have one. My bad.

I'm sorry but she is such a cutie, the hair doesn't matter:)

Well I know you're not listening... but she is so stinkin' cute!!

March 16, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

those are awesome and she's adorable -- even on a bad hair day.

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterjanet

She's adorable, but I know what you are saying. I hate the only portraits we have of Eleanor so far. So much so that I refused to choose any of them and left it to my husband. So nice of me...now I can blame the picture people AND him. Charming, I know.

Which PP did you use? I have been to South Hills and Robinson. We need to do some in the next two weeks, just before both kids' birthdays.

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKim

She's cute regardless of how much she get's bruised. It's her smile - it's just that fantastic.

Are those panda bears on her shirt AND her pants? How cute!!

Hallie :)

Take your fingers out of your ears and listen - she's ADORABLE, and you don't need to take any more pictures! She looks like the happy little impish 2 year old that she is!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJenn

I have gone through that with both my kids - constant injuries - even with different caregivers and family members it's the nature of the beat at that age. My son was the worst. I have countless photos of him with big scabs on his face.

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterGina

They are adorable or I should say SHE is adorable, hair and all!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Those are adorable! Get your fingers out of your ears crazy. You'll realize later that the 'not so perfect' ones, are the ones you'll treasure the most. She looks precious in those pictures, I think they're wonderful.

OK...don't yell at me, but those photos are stinkin' cute! Stinkin' cute? Hmmm.. not sure those words go together but I like them...how about that instead. But you are her mommy and you know best so I think you should do what you want and get more if you like. I just love the one of her coming out of the box!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJonny's mommy

I know you can't hear me, but that pic (2nd from last) in the box is SO CUTE!!!!!!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterKathryn

Okay, I am the worlds pickiest critic of kid's pictures, so I totally hear what you are saying. I personally hate the corny props these places use, like the big honking 2, and the box, and the plastic ugly cakes, etc. I just like a great picture of my kid, that captures the personality perfectly, and I've been around Alexis, and these don't do her justice. I do like the last one, though.

Unplug thos ears girl! SHe is CUTE!!!!!!!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarmarbug

They're all cute! I know you've got your fingers in your ears but these are darling!

Heh, and I did a post about my daughter's hair today. Great minds and all.

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterTootsie Farklepants

The last two pictures totally rock. Get your fingers out of your ears! They're great! And the bruise pictures are just reminders of the reality of having a two year old. Don't wait till there are no marks. Most families have two year old pictures with black eyes and bruises. It's who they are.

My middle child? I took him to the doctor because of it - thought he had an ear infection (I think I already told you this). He was growing so fast he couldn't stay upright. So normal.

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterFlea

My fav is the one of her in the alpha block! :) cute!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterHolly

Love the portraits! She is so darn photogenic. Poor Maren is on the same crash course with her head . . . I am going back through your archives to order her a helmet in the hopes that she goes at least an hour without a new dinger.

OhI gave you something. Check out my blog!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarmarbug

My favorite is the last picture...she' so darn cute!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarie

Those are great pics of Alexis, but you know what? Yours are way better of her.

You and I go to the same place (obviously in different cities, it'd be silly for me to drive all the way to the Burgh just for Picture People).

At Little Man's 2-year pics? He was playing peekaboo in that box and he missed the last time and slammed his head onto the side of the box. After he stopped crying, I told the girl to hurry up and finish the shoot before the black eye appeared. Fun times.

I hear it gets way worse once you have two.

I can so sympathize with the daycare injuries! When Jock was about 7 months old, we had an "incident" at the daycare center where he was at. And NO ONE could tell me HOW it happened, or WHEN it happened. What I was told? "Well, when we went to feed him his mashed potatoes at lunch, we noticed he had a loose tooth and a mouth full of blood."

WTH!?!?!?

The kid only had two teeth! And that tooth wasn't loose, it had been pulled so far forward that it was sticking out the front of his gums, not the top anymore! It required 7 STITCHES in his tiny little baby gums!

According to the dentist, what we think PROBABLY happened is that he was pulling himself up on the toy shelves, which were wood, bit down (he was teething), slipped and fell, and his tooth got caught in a knick under on the underside of the shelf and got yanked.

You still can't convince me that he didn't scream and cry. And I know its been 14 years, but I STILL get very angry about it!

Ok. I'll give you back your comments now. :)

Yeah, you're crazy. She is especially adorable in those shots. I hear ya about not getting the one you wanted, but these others are REALLY adorable. As if a picture of Alexis could be anything else!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered Commentercaramama

Those turned out great!!! SO cute!!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

I wish I looked that cute on my bad-hair days. *sigh*

Also, after several similar scenarios with PP, we discovered Portrait Innovations. They seem more willing to work with the parents, they seem to schedule more time for sittings, you get your pics back in like 20 min (NO LIE!!!), they have crazy-good prices, and um, we love them. Don't know if any of http://www.portraitinnovations.com/find_a_location/?state_abbr=PA" REL="nofollow">these locations are close to you, but they may be worth checking out. Did I tell you about great prices? I know you love a bargain (so do I). And you get a CD of all your pics. We usually have 70+ proofs to choose from and, geez...I've hijacked your comments without even being entertaining...email me if you want more gushing about this portrait company. ;)

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterColleen

I've only done portraits once. And I'm never going through that hell again.

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterjennifer

Oh she is one friggin' cute ass girl! I love the panda bear picture and the last one. But they are ALL great- hot messy hair and all.

I'm sure some other girl at day care was just jealous that Alexis is the hottest 2 year old EVAH and tried to take her down. Being Alexis---I'm sure the other girl is looking worse ;)

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterPam

You must be kidding! She's so stinkin' cute! Those with the "2" are frameworthy for sure. What a little ham she it :) My daughter's 2 yr portraits were awful...I think there's 1 out of 20 shots where she's smiling.

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterSandy C.

I swear I always have those problems with getting my kiddo's photo taken, too. He always claws himself and gets a cut or bashes his head into the floor or something EVERY TIME. I think he does it out of spite. I mean, if somebody dragged me in to have my portrait made, I'd probably claw myself to get out of it, too.

*sigh*

I LOVE that panda outfit! She is so adorable. Her smile always looks so mischievous!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterBren

My daughter Allie always manages to get a bruise on her face the day before we take her to get pictures. It's almost an ongoing joke in our house! haha. :) Your little on is such a cutie!

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered Commenteramanda

I wouldn't be so worried about the facial bruises...I'd be more worried about the giant ZZ's all over her. :)

Very cute, but it's your right to be picky.

March 17, 2008 | Unregistered Commenterjust jamie

I love her grin, she is edible!

She is ADORABLE. Hot mess hair and all.

About the bruises, I have a trick for you. If you see her stumble and you know she'll bruise, if you catch it in time (like within the first minute or two), smear butter on the spot (or margarine) and it WILL NOT bruise. I promise. It know it's weird, but I've tested it several times and it never fails. Laugh all you want. It works.

As for when she gets smacked by a kid at day care I have no tricks. I'd be pissed too with out an explanation.

The photo software I use has a great GREAT blemish repair. If you want info on it, e-mail me. I even took a kool-aid mustache off Gracie the other day in a picture!!

March 18, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterCecily R

I agree that you do not have enough kids if you think these aren't great! LOL! That last one is the look of an angel staring at the mother she adores. What's not to love??
